QR codes and UPI: safety checks before paying

A QR code can initiate a payment flow. Verify the recipient and amount before approving.

Practical guide ยท Updated November 2026

A QR is not proof of identity

Anyone can create or share a QR image. Do not treat a QR code as proof that a merchant or recipient is genuine.

Verify before approving

After scanning, verify the recipient name, UPI ID and amount in your payment app before entering your UPI PIN.

Never enter a PIN to receive money

A UPI PIN is used to authorise a payment, not to receive money. Do not share OTPs, PINs or screen access.

Use official support

For a suspicious payment or dispute, contact your bank/payment app using official channels.
